Three Dimensional Approaches in Oral Health:

Toothpaste is a collection of a number of highly active ingredients having their mechanical as well as chemical action, presented in form of a pasted packed in a collapsible plastic tube, with inner inactive surface. The action starts in the oral cavity, when a small quantity is put on the toothbrush for brushing teeth. These ingredients get mixed with the salivary secretion and the detergent present makes a thick foamy liquid which does not drip and reaches all the corners of oral cavity, where ever the toothbrush is in action.

The abrasives act by removing the stains of dis-colouration and plaque superficially lining the teeth. Every waste matter removed gets mixed with the foam present and is spilled out on rinsing with water. The fluoride present in the toothpaste helps in correcting tooth decay and it’s demineralization. The sweetener present ensures that the taste is palatable and depending on the flavouring agent it produces fruity feeling or mint coolness, a delight for the moment.

The prime function of toothpaste for enhancing the cosmetic appearance of teeth while smiling besides ensuring good hygienic conditions in the mouth preventing activities of bacteria resulting in decaying of teeth and sticking of food particles and formation of plaque. Plaque present is due to un-prevented activity of bacteria and formation metabolites as result of bacterial action.

Mouthwash is a solution of active ingredients responsible for preventing bacterial growth and improving the taste of mouth. It is diluted with water according to instructions on the label of product or as per advice of the doctor to rinse the mouth. The action of mouth wash substantiates the diminishing action of toothpaste. Thus the mouth remains under protection for more time.

Electric toothbrush: It is an electronic device combining a miniature motor and a detachable tooth brush head capable of making oscillating motions and act as a tooth brush to clean the teeth. It derives it’s current from 1 12 volt re-chargeable device and operates continuously for 2 minutes duration sufficient to clean all the teeth surfaces.
