The Emotional Effects of Nose Cosmetic Surgery
After a nose cosmetic surgery the emotions of the patient can swing on
of 2 ways. The first response, after the healing process is completed is
simply “happy”. The result of the finished product has worked to remove
a once distractingly ugly feature on the face and in its place is a face
reflecting renewed confidence.
For others, the mood can become even more depressing than it was before
the nose cosmetic surgery took place. This feeling of depression can by
caused by several factors.
One is the fleeting fact that any intrusive surgery on the face is
painful. Though the pain subsides relatively quickly the nagging
inconvenience of a tender nose condition can last up to a year. Residual
symptoms can also include a temporary loss of smell and taste, a clogged
feeling in the nose and possibly the onslaught of an infection.
Another cause could be the loss of sleep that comes from needing to
sleep with your head in an almost upright position for several nights
after the surgery. This lack of sleep can cause a temporary state of
depression and if not understood could lead to deeper discontent and
regret with the decision to having nose surgery.
A long term depression can be the result of not liking the end result.
Statistics show that and average of 10 to 15 percent of patients
undergoing nose cosmetic surgery will not like their new nose and will
proceed with another phase of either surgery or revision Rhinoplasty.
There is an even larger percentage of patients who regret their new nose
but will not make any further changes to their face.
The best strategy should take place in the mind before nose cosmetic
surgery. Be aware of the risks, be realistic with expectation and keep
the end result in mind to help ride through the pain and discomfort of
the surgery and healing process.
